En oikein välittänyt aikaisemmin tekemäni pipon mallista ja törmätessäni tähän ötökkäkuvioon Ravelry sivustolla olin myyty. Pipon malli ei niinkään ollut makuuni, mutta etenkin pieni yksityiskohta, jossa siellä täällä on räjähtäneitä ötököitä, teki vaikutuksen. Tämä sopii mielestäni sekä nuorille, että nuorekkaille!
*I didn't exactly like the model of the hat I made earlier and when I bumped into this bug pattern on Ravelry, I was sold. The exact model wasn't really my style, but especially the small details, where there're some bugs exploding, impressed me. I think this suits for youths and youthfuls.*

Alkuun loin 135 silmukkaa, joka ei kylläkään ole parillinen luku, joten joustinneule ei mennyt tasan. Tällä silmukkamäärällä ötökkäkuvio toistuu kuitenkin mukavasti kolme kertaa. Joustinneuletta tein noin 10 kerrosta ja 5 kerrosta aina oikein. Kavennukset aloitin 6:ssa kohtaa kun työ olin noin 13 cm korkea. Ensin kavensin joka toinen kerros. Lankakerä alkoi kuitenkin näyttämään turhan pieneltä ja sovittamalla totesin, että joka kerroksella kaventamalla tulee vielä ihan sopivan kokoinen pipo, joten tihensin kavennusta loppua kohti.
*First I casted on 135 stitches, which isn't even number, so the ribbing didn't turn out even. This amount of stitches allowed the bug pattern to be repeated exactly 3 times. I knitted 10 rows of ribbing and 5 rows of garter stitches. The decreasings I started when the hat was about 13 cm and did them 6 times a row. First I decreased every second row. Later the skein started to look too small and when I tried the hat on, I was sure it would be fine if I'd decreased every row. Therefore I thickened the decreasings towards the end.*
Teinpä nyt sitten elämässäni ensimmäistä kertaa pipon ja yhtälailla ensimmäistä kertaa kirjoneuletta. Itse pipon mallihan on erittäin helppo, kun tehdään ainoastaan oikeaa (korvaläppiä lukuunottamatta, joissa nurjapuoli neulotaan nurjana). Idea pipon tekemiseen tuli "Knit Along on Google+" -yhteisöstä, jos tämä on joulukuun tehtävänä.
*Now I have made the first knitted hat in my life, as well as first colored knitting. The pattern of the hat was quite easy, since it has only knits (except the ear flaps required stockinette stitches). The idea of making the hat comes from "Knit Along on Google+" -community, where this is the task of the month.*

Muutamia omia pikku muutoksia tuli matkan varrella tehtyä. Ensinnäkin valittu lanka ja puikot ovat jonkin verran ohjetta ohuempia, joten ihan perstuntumalla lisäsin silmukoita. Lopputuloksena yhteensä 24 simukkaa per korvaläppä ja korvaläppien väliin 41 silmukkaa per puoli. Lisäksi muuntelin hieman kirjoneulekuviota, siten että jokaisen rivin silmukat tein tuplana. Ja kuten kuvistakin voi huomata, en käyttänyt kahta vastakkaista väriä ihan vaan rahan ja ajan säästämiseksi. Kolmatta väriä olisi tullut kuitenkin aika vähän.
*I made couple of own modifications along the way. First I selected thinner yarn and needles, therefore I had to cast on more feeling based stitches. In the end I cast on 24 stitches/earflap and between the earflaps 41 stitches/side. I modified the colored knitting part as well. Each row I knitted the stitches twice the amount the pattern says. As you also may notice, I didn't you two contrasting colors just to save time and money. There weren't that many parts that required the third color.*
Vielä muutamia vinkkejä työtä helpottamaan (ainakin omasta mielestäni!)
- Tee korvaläpät samoilla pyöröpuikoilla kuin itse hattu. Ei tarvitse ostaa erikseen sukkapuikkoja, jos oikean kokoisia ei jo valmiiksi omista, vaikka ne kyllä helpottaa kavennuksia tehtäessä. Tai toki voi tehdä pelkästään sukkapuikoilla ja jättää pyöröt ostamatta.
- Korvaläpän viimeinen kerros on nurjaa. Tällöin neuloessasi korvaläppää oikealla kiinni luotuihin silmukoihin/itse työhön, pystyt samalla päättelemään korvaläpän langanpään seuraavaa kerrosta neuloessasi.
- Luo korvaläppien väliset silmukat esim. silmuillen luoden . Mielestäni on turha lisätä pääteltävien lankojen päitä, kun silmukat voi luoda työn keskellekin. Ja jos reunasta ei tule siisti, niin ei haittaa! Lopuksi reunat virkataaan siisteiksi.
- Lisää heijastinlankaa tupsuun. Pienellä vaivalla hatun saa näkymään pimeällä. Yleispätevä tupsuohje löytyy mm. täältä .
*Some tips to ease your work (at least in my opinion!)
- Use the same circular needle for the earflaps as for the hat. It's not necessary to buy double pointed needles, if you don't have them already, although they do help when doing decreases. You may also knit these with double pointed needles and leave the circular needle to the store.
- The last row of earflap is the wrong side. Then you can weave the end of the ear flap to the next row, when you are adding the ear flap to the project itself.
- Cast on the stitches between the ear flaps with single cast-on method. I think it's unnecessary to have two strands of yarn when joining the ear flaps to the project.
- Add some reflective thread to the pompom. With some effort, you can make your hat visible in dark as well.*
